Top 3 Reasons to be a Shutterbug

Ciao lovelies! Today’s post is about culture- specifically the “millennial” culture that we always hear about. Tons of people like to say that millennials are selfish, stuck behind screens and too dependent on technology. Often I hear people griping about how millennials are too camera inclined, taking too many photos instead of “just enjoying (their) surroundings!” Well I’m here to tell you that taking photos is great, and I’ve got 3 amazing reasons why being addicted to your smartphone camera isn’t as bad as some think.

Sure, people like to bash things like “selfie-culture” and such, but when it comes down to it, cameras are great! We can capture precious memories and save them for years to come. So here’s 3 fantastic reasons to be a shutterbug. (By the way, for those unaware, shutterbug is a term for someone who takes pictures of like, everything)

Reason #1- Gaining a New Perspective
Something that I love about “millennial culture” is how much we stop to photograph just random stuff around us. If we see something we like, something our friends may like, something funny, snap! Instantly we can get a digital picture and send it off to our friends, family, and co-workers. I feel that this gives us a new perspective on life. We now look at the world through a different lens, pun intended. We are more observant and appreciative of the cool stuff all around us, because hey, it might make a great picture.

Reason #2- Creating Memories
Everyone gripes about how people these days have no respect for history, how people take selfies and pictures on monuments and such. And I do agree in some cases (I think the people who take selfies on the Holocaustmemorials are just SO WRONG like oh my god), not all cases are valid. Sometimes, we just want to document our adventures, our good times with friends and family, to cherish it forever. If you’re into scrapbooking or journaling, I recommend printing out the pictures and using them. If you want to take it a step further, invest in a FujiFilm Instax Mini, they come in lovely pastel colors, have cute cases and film options, and are small enough to fit in a bujo or other trendy journal.
If physical documentation isn’t your thing, share, share, share on social media! It’s not annoying to share your memories on social media websites. I find it cute when I see people having fun and sharing a quick pic on Facebook or Instagram.

Reason #3- Confidence
For some, being in front of cameras is great! And for others, well, not so much. Some people just hate having their picture taken. And that’s okay! What’s great about being a shutterbug is that you’re behind the camera, so you can control what you look like in pictures. And what’s awesome about technology? Selfie cameras. You can control lighting, angle, etc so you can feel more confident sharing your beautiful face with the world! And if phone cameras aren’t your thing, you can even find cute little selfie mirrors for an Instax. They even have cute little animal ears! (Click the photo for buying options!)

So that’s my take on the matter. I think the rise in smartphone camera photography is a great thing! Some people think it’s ruining the art of photography, but I think it’s making photography more accessible as a hobby to those who can’t buy an expensive camera and a phone. Instead, we can buy them together. Or buy a cute instant camera

Another fun thing I’d like to mention as sort of a bonus is an app called “Foap.” This app lets you sell your smartphone camera photography as stock photos! You could make $5 every time one of your photos sells a license! It’s free and I found it quite easy to use. You simply upload pictures, give them a caption, add some tags, and answer some legal questions (the questions are super simple- “is there a person in this photo,” “is their face visible,” basics like that) and then you can be on your way to making simple side cash with this app! It works with a verified PayPal account. Also, no, I am not sponsored by this app. I simply found it and wanted to share it with you all. I actually found out about it through a Penny Hoarder article on ways to make side cash in 2017!
