Our Planet is in Trouble- Make YOUR Voice Heard! - Global Climate Strike

Ciao lovelies. Normally, OFT serves as a sort of escape for many people. We normally like to make content that helps people take a break from the stresses of life. There are some things that we can’t take breaks from, however- protecting our Planet is one of those things. So today, I want to talk to you all about some ways that you can make a difference on Friday, September 20th, 2019.

What is the Global Climate Strike?

The Global Climate Strike is a movement in which people all over the world are stepping away from school and work and taking to the streets to protest inaction of legislators on climate and environmental issues. This movement will happen on September 20th, 2019, and it is happening all over the world. When I say all over the world, I mean it. They even have a locator on their site where you can look up to see if there’s a protest near you.

Spearheading this movement is the young activist Greta Thunberg.

Who is Greta Thunberg?

Greta Thunberg is a 16 years old environmental protection activist from Sweden. Her past work for the environment shows her dedication. Greta began a movement called “Fridays for Future” where she and other Swedish students protested outside of the Swedish parliament.

Recently, Greta traveled to the US by means of zero-emissions sailboat. Her mission for doing this was to attend the the UN Climate Action Summit in New York City. But while in the US, she’s also starting the Global Climate Strike.

Greta Thunberg has done some amazing things with her activist work. So what can we as global citizens do as well?

What We Can Do

First and foremost, we can make personal changes. Things like reducing our water consumption, single use plastic consumption, and more. These are good changes to make on an individual level. But individuals are not the only problem.

A lot of companies are getting away with practices that are harmful to the environment while passing the blame onto the consumers entirely. And while yes, individuals need to make lifestyle changes, individuals should also remember that companies are doing harmful things to the environment on a huge scale. And unfortunately, many legislatures are letting them.

So how can we make our voices heard and let governments and companies know that we demand change?

Join Us

One option is to join us on September 20th, 2019 for the Global Climate Strike. You can use their locator on their website to find a protest near you. For example, I was able to use it to find that there’s one in my area of Staunton, VA, led by Shenandoah Green!

If you can’t attend the protest for whatever reason, promote it! Share about it on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. Share environmental news when you can. Write to your local and federal lawmakers regarding environmental action. Let them know that we won’t allow them to continue to ignore the issues happening to our environment.

Before I go, a big thank you to Shenandoah Green for bringing the Global Climate Strike to my attention! If you live in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, USA, and want to get more involved in environmental activism and change, check out their organization!

Thank you so much for reading. I will see you in my next post.
