TikTok in Trouble! Is TikTok Dangerous for Kids?

Ciao lovelies! I know this isn’t the expected Kawaii Fridays post, but this topic really jumped out at me and I felt it was important to share. The popular video sharing app TikTok has recently come under fire and was fined by the FTC. Why? They were collecting data from their users, but most concerningly: from children. But that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Anyone who’s ever heard of TikTok but doesn’t use it themselves has probably heard the rumors that TikTok had a lot of children on the app making videos. I personally had heard this, but since I’ve never used TikTok myself, I didn’t really know. Apparently though, according to the FTC (Federal Trade Commission), TikTok’s workers/owners knew.

"Even when parents contacted the company and asked that their child's personal information be deleted, the company failed to take adequate steps," said Andrew Smith, director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection, in a conference call with NBC News.

TikTok ended up being fined $5.7 million by the FTC for violating children’s privacy law in the USA, because they knowingly collected the data of users under 13.

What is TikTok doing to fix this problem? The company plans to implement a sort of “child-lock” for users under 13, making it to where they can only like and view content and follow users, but can’t create content or upload content to TikTok.

The fact that TikTok is collecting children’s data is very distressing, but it’s only the beginning to TikTok’s problems.

According to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children in the UK, TikTok is a “hunting ground” for predators. "We know that a significant amount of children are being contacted via popular livestreaming apps, such as TikTok, by abusers who are using them as a hunting ground," a spokesperson for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children said.

Other dangers run rampant on TikTok as well- according to C-Net, “Searches on TikTok showed content that appears to promote eating disorders and self-harm” as well.

What is TikTok doing to prevent predators and other abusive individuals from reaching children on their platform? Currently they haven’t given any comments to any news outlets regarding the issue.

To circle back to the title of this article- Is TikTok dangerous for kids? In its current form, I think yes.

What do you think? Is TikTok dangerous for kids? Is it dangerous in general? Please let me know what you think in the comments below. I’d love to have a discussion regarding this issue so I can get further insight and new perspectives.

That’s all for today, thank you for allowing this slight break in regular posting! Remember to love yourself, stay awesome, and I’ll see you in my next post!
